History to shockwave therapy:

Since 1980 lithotripsy has been used as a conservative treatment option for kidney stones. This is a powerful type of shockwave therapy which uses high energy waves to break up the kidney stones into small fragments. Over time the benefits of shockwave on the surrounding tissues such as bones, muscles and ligaments were realised.

Shockwave is now highly recognised an effective treatment for many common conditions.

How does shockwave therapy work?

Shockwave energy is a wave of sound energy that is applied via a treatment head to a painful region. This has the effect of increasing blood flow and metabolism to the area effectively stimulating a chronic condition to become more acute, promoting repair and regeneration, allowing the tissues to heal.

The therapist can adapt the energy level delivered to the tissue by altering the BAR pressure on the treatment head.

What will it feel like?

Ultrasound gel is applied to the area and then the treatment head delivers the shockwaves as it is moved across the tissues. The wave intensity peaks after a high rise in energy and then falls off quickly. Each second you will receive between 4-21 shockwaves resulting in several thousand pulses being applied per treatment session. The pulses are felt within the tissues and can be slightly uncomfortable but the intensity can be adapted by the therapist during the treatment.

Number of sessions?

Although patients may have immediate pain relief post treatment between 3-6 treatment sessions are advised from clinical trials for most benefit.
